Castara - Village - Information |

Castara is a tiny fisher village at the Caribbean coast of Tobago. It has only a few hundred inhabitants, some small grocery shops with an amazing variety of items on the shelfs, a few small restaurants with a limited choice of nice local food, a nice village beach with beach bar and that's about it. However, we observed that in the past few years the village is expanding and more little shops and guesthouses open up. Castara is ideal for those who appreciate peace and quiet, love nature, swimming, snorkelling or hiking, brought a suitcase full of books they always wanted to read and who don't mind the barely existing nightlife. You can enjoy excellent fish (or even catch it yourself) and otherwise just relax and do nothing at all. If you want to explore the island you should rent a car because public transport is still irregular especially in the evening, on weekends and public holidays. It's a 30 minutes drive to Scarborough and another 20 minutes to the beaches of Mt. Irvine and to Crown Point in case you want to go shopping. Castara has no banks, drugstore, gas station (planned) or cocktail bars; you drink the local beer (which is by the way quite good) or rum, which you can always use to create your own cocktail if you feel like it. Do not expect higher European or American standard in Castara: your accommodation is nice and clean but the floor is not always tiled, hot water supply is not always functioning and if something goes wrong the plumber for example will not come the very next day. The problem will be taken care of in the typical Caribbean way: take your time, relax, don't get upset and improvise. Castara is ideal if you want to visit different nature sites during your stay. Or you can spend a few days there and then move on in case you want to experience more life/nightlife.
