BARBADOS: 265.000 inhabitants, language english.

Long white sandy beaches all around the island, excellent for bathing the west coast, for lovely long walks the long and empty beaches of the south coast, the most spectacular views on the rocky east coast facing the atlantic ocean.

You can reach easily everywhere in Barbados due to the amount of roads and a well developed public transport system. Attention: left hand driving ! You will find duty free shops, malls, restaurants and bars of all kind all over the island.

You can snorkel, dive, surf, do horse riding, sailing , or make a trip in the underwater world in a little submarine. A special attraction is also the 500.000 year old Harrison's cave which you can visit comfortably in a little train. Barbados has lovely and well maintained nature parks, but there is no rain forest.

The inhabitants are friendly, used to tourism and mostly helpful especially when it comes to their confusing system of road signs which you will experience in renting a car.

The drinking water is excellent, the mosquitos plentiful and you should carry with you repellent and net.

The general costs of living are unfortunately very high, especially for basic food, vegetables and fruits. Expensive and often overpriced are also restaurants and bars of all categories. Most entertainment also at night takes place in the capital Bridgetown and on the west coast until Speightstown.

Car rentals are also very expensive (US$ 50.- - 60.- per days) - most of them include a CDW but be aware that this DOES NOT waiver the excess amount of US$ 500.- in case of a major accident.

Mostly everything is very expensive in BARBADOS - it is a lovely island for sightseeing and excellent for shopping if you have a generous budget.

You will find accomodations and hotels everywhere but mostly at very high rates. The average price for a standard double room without breakfast in a simple or middle class hotel ranges between US$ 150.- and US$ 200.- per night.

SUNBIRD HOLIDAYS has been to Barbados and discovered some better priced private apartments: average rate for a self contained studio (also directly at the beach) between US$ 50.- and US$ 70.- per night for 2 persons. Deposit normally 10 % plus US$ 40.- handling fee, rest payment in Barbados, no credit cards because these are private accomodations.
